Medtronic Bowel Control Therapy – InterStim – is a proven treatment option that helps target bowel incontinence. Bowel incontinence is due to the brain and sacral nerves not communicating correctly. This procedure helps with improving the communication problem between the brain and the sacral nerves. Medtronic Bowel Control Therapy may help patients resume daily activities and help avoid bowel incontinence.
Medtronic Bowel Control Therapy is available to our patients through an evaluation procedure. This procedure will help find out whether it will work for you before making a long-term commitment. During the evaluation, a thin wire is inserted in your upper buttock and attached to a small external device that you can wear discreetly under your clothing. The evaluation, which lasts several days, will allow you to still have the freedom to do most of your regular activities.
There is no prep for the evaluation procedure, and it is done in the convenience of our office. Your physician will provide you with information regarding how to operate the test device, activity restrictions, and other precautions related to the evaluation. If the evaluation is successful, long term therapy may be pursued. With the long term therapy, a flexible wire and a neurostimulator are implanted under the skin in a minimally invasive outpatient procedure.
